Independence Rock - to quote the brochure.....This granite monolith is one of the more famous landmarks along the Oregon Trail. Independence Rock is most famous for the names inscribed on its face - the names and dates of people who passed by this place in search of a new life in the frontier. (One of the scouts in our Troop was able to locate the name of one of his ancestors.) It stands 6,028 above sea level. The tallest point of the rock is 136 feet above the surrounding terrain. If one were to walk around the base of this rock, the distance covered would be more than a mile, or 5,900 feet. The mass of Independence Rock is equal to an area of 24.81 acres. Apparently one of the reasons it's named Independence Rock is because if you left at the right time in the Spring you would get to Ind. Rock right around July 4th.
