Unplugged

Last night we had severe thunderstorms and for the first time since we moved here our power went out.  Luckily the kids and I had just barely finished eating an early dinner so we didn't have to worry about that.  The power stayed out for a few hours and only came back on around 9 or 9:30pm - after the kids were in bed.  First of all, it was really cool for a change to only have the little bit of daylight that was left plus candle light and flashlights.  Second, we had sooooo much fun while the power was out.  The kids made sock puppets and put on a puppet show.  We used flashlights to light up the "stage".  Then we played about 3 rounds of hide and seek which was lots of fun in the dark.  Heather, my 13 year old, has just started reading the Twilight series.  She finished the first book last night by flashlight.  Geoffrey, my 10 year old, made the comment that he was glad the power went out because it taught him how much fun he could have without electronics (apparently he forgot about all the time spent playing in the yard, playing sports, swimming, board games, etc.)  They seemed to even have fun taking a flashlight to use the bathroom!  I wouldn't ever want to give up electricity permanently, but it was sure fun for a few hours.

Wow, that DOES sound like fun! Maybe we should turn out the lights more often! And yet, our power stayed on the whole time over here! Fortunately, Steve's work let him out early to be on the 4:30 train...that meant he walked in the door 10 minutes before the terrential winds and rains began. Sorry for the coworkers and friends that were trapped on the next train that got stopped do the storm and didn't get home for hours later.

I agree. When the lights go out, the fun begins. "Sardines" is my favorite dark game. Great story.

My Blog

This blog started as a way to let family and friends who don't live close to us see what was going on in our lives. It has also become a kind of family journal/scrapbook. Enjoy!
