Heather is on the cross country team at school. She competes against other 8th grade girls but mostly she competes against herself. It's an ongoing quest to better your time. Each race is 2 miles long - rain or shine. They only cancel if there's lightning. They do not run on a track, or on blacktop or cement - they run on grass/dirt. Every race is different because the scenery and terrain are always different. She loves it. Here is a picture of all the girls on her team. She is in the 3rd row, 2nd in from the right.
(Your hair gets a little messed up when you are running around outside.)
As I attend her meets I am very impressed with the sportsmanship of all the family and friends who are there to cheer on their runners. It's the only sport I've seen where just about everyone cheers for everyone. Yes, we cheer a little harder when our runner goes by but us spectators are so impressed that these kids are out there running a 2 mile race that we all cheer on and encourage all the runners...whether they're in the lead or dead last. It's refreshing.

How about a Naper4 Cross Country team? We could all use the motivation, and the cheering wouldn't hurt, either.
